The transformation happening in Peru’s Southern Andes is nothing short of beautiful. Since 2008, Yudi Llocclla and the Peace and Hope (Paz y Esperanza) team in Apurímac have been champions for Quechua children’s right to learn in their own language—and the results speak volumes.
Over 1,000 Indigenous children and teens have flourished in programs that honor their cultural heritage. Through persistent advocacy, the team secured teacher housing in remote mountain villages, technology-equipped classrooms, libraries, and nutrition programs. But the real breakthrough? Children now learn first in Quechua, their mother tongue, before transitioning to Spanish. This simple act of respect has transformed shy, silenced students into confident learners.
Parents who once pushed their children to abandon traditional ways now celebrate their Indigenous identity. Teachers who resisted bilingual education now champion it. Students who started in the program are graduating high school and pursuing technical training and university—staying rooted in their communities while building brighter futures.
When education affirms who children are in the eyes of God, everything changes. This is what a just peace looks like.
Unfailing love and truth have met together.
Justice and peace have kissed!
