How U.S. Foreign Aid Cuts Are Impacting Survivors of Violence in Peru
Injustice doesn’t pause. Healing can’t wait. But right now, a critical program providing legal and psychological support to survivors of violence in Peru has been forced to shut down—leaving those in urgent need without help.
Recent U.S. foreign aid policy changes have cut funding for humanitarian programs worldwide, and Peace and Hope International is feeling the impact firsthand. The abrupt loss of over $300,000 in U.S. funding has halted a vital initiative that provided legal accompaniment, trauma counseling, and educational support for survivors of violence and discrimination. Overnight, four dedicated staff members lost their jobs, and the people they served were left without the resources they depended on to rebuild their lives.
What This Means for Survivors
This program has been a beacon of hope for women and children navigating the difficult road to justice. Survivors of domestic violence, trafficking, and gender-based violence turned to Peace and Hope (Paz y Esperanza) for legal representation, counseling, and a supportive community that believed in their dignity and rights.
Now, with the program suspended, these survivors are left in limbo. Without legal advocacy, many face the risk of further harm. Without counseling, trauma remains unhealed. Without education support, opportunities for a better future slip away.
“This program was a lifeline for women and children facing violence, exploitation, and discrimination,” said Jorge Arboccó, National Director of Paz y Esperanza Peru. “We are heartbroken that we’ve had to pause services, and we are determined to restore them as quickly as possible. Survivors deserve justice, and we need urgent support to make that happen.”
The Bigger Picture
This isn’t just about one program—it’s about the ripple effect across Latin America. Many organizations that rely on U.S. government funding are now scrambling to find alternative resources to continue their life-saving work. The consequences of these aid cuts are widespread, hitting the most vulnerable communities the hardest.
But we refuse to stand by and let this be the end of the story.
