What does Indigenous mean?

As we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Peace and Hope (Paz y Esperanza) this year, we are excited to host a monthly Zoom gathering, with different leaders each month, from throughout Latin America who are working for peace and justice, bringing hope to people and the communities where Paz y Esperanza is located.

Last month we met with leaders in Colombia and Panama working with a component of Paz y Esperanza called Memoria Indígena. This unique ministry is a collective of Indigenous Christians and some non-Indigenous allies who work together toward a shared vision of cultivating Indigenous churches that have a strong self-identity, rooting their Christian practices in their own contexts and working as agents of change in the Creator’s work of reconciling all things. We seek to do this by recording the memories and testimonies of Indigenous Christians, accompanying young Indigenous leaders in their journey of reconciling their faith and identities, and in these processes creating spaces for intercultural dialogue in the church and helping Indigenous Christians to articulate theological, missiological and ecclesiological proposals that respond to the realities and context of their own peoples.

The meeting via Zoom was a special time as we learned more deeply about the work taking place, especially for supporters in North America to have the opportunity to dialogue and ask questions directly with leaders–everything from “What does Indigenous mean?” to “Where do you see God at work in exciting ways among the Indigenous church?” We were all blessed by the evening together, overcoming language barriers and various timezones, as people who invest in this work and people on the ground with experience came together to rejoice in what God is doing through this aspect of Paz y Esperanza.

You are invited to join us! This month the meeting is on Tuesday, April 6, from 8pm-8:45pm (Eastern Time, USA), and the focus will be on work taking place in Lima, Peru. RSVP for this month’s gathering to receive the Zoom link, or tune in on April 6 by Facebook Live on Peace and Hope International’s Facebook page.

We’d love to meet you, and share about what God is doing through Paz y Esperanza. Bendiciones!
