Breaking linguistic barriers:
As Peace and Hope we are proud to be one of the winners of the ZeroProject 2024 award for our project, Lengua de señas (sign language), for disadvantaged deaf people, which was selected by an international peer review board in a multi-stage process. This project was selected from 523 nominations from 97 countries for its innovation, impact and scalability. We share the testimony of Profesor Jessy Chávez, the professor in charge of the project, who traveled to Vienna, Austria to receive the Zero Project Award 2024 on behalf of Peace and Hope (Paz y Esperanza).
“Last February I had the privilege of attending the International Zero Project Conference in Austria, where I was invited to be one of the speakers. My trip began with weeks of preparation, revising my presentation, meeting with the Zero Project team beforehand and making sure I had everything for the big event. The day of the trip arrived and, while I was very nervous about the commitment it entailed to present the work, not only from Peace and Hope, but also of the collective of parents of deaf and hard-of-hearing Youth of the Amazon (COPANIJOSA) in front of an international audience, I was also excited to present the work with the whole world… the different practices, forms and work strategies that we have in place to educate people who are deaf in the Amazon region.”
The Zero Project’s 2024 Conference in Vienna brought together more than 1,000 disabled and non-disabled change agents from all corners of the globe to discuss and replicate innovative solutions for disability inclusion. The conference took place from February 21 to 23, 2024, at the United Nations Office in Vienna, Austria.
The conference focused on the theme of inclusive education and ICTs, where the innovative solutions of the 43 winning countries of ZERO PROJECT were presented, including Peace and Hope.
We are so proud of the the local Peace and Hope team in San Martin, Peru, the students and parents, and Jessy Chávez: winners of the ZeroProject 2024 award!
